Important Questions about Eyelid Surgery

During the course of our consultations, we have noticed that many patients ask the same questions regarding eyelid lifts. For your convenience, we have listed the five most frequently asked and important below. We hope you find the information useful.

  1. Is the result long-lasting? When does a subsequent procedure become necessary?

If in your youth, you have had bags under your eyes removed through a transconjunctival lower-lid blepharoplasty, without the removal of excess skin, you can possibly avoid a later open lower-lid lift (with additional removal of skin). A procedure such as this could also easily be performed after 15 or 20 years. Lower eyelid surgery is always a complex procedure as it does not just involve removing excess skin, but also the anatomical causes of lower eye bags: In particular, the re-distribution of fat tissues and tightening of the blinking muscles. Hence, the future development of bags under the eyes is prevented. Consequently it is only rarely that a subsequent procedure is necessary, and if so, just after decades. Similarly, an upper-eyelid lift does not just remove excess skin, but also involves work on the musculature and fat tissues, and if needed an eyebrow lift. As with lower lid surgery, a subsequent surgery should not be needed, and if so, only after 10 or 15 years at the earliest.

  2. Is there any risk of injury to the eye?

In general, you can not totally exclude the possibility of the eye being injured due to its anatomical proximity. However, with routine operations using magnifying glasses and optical devices, this problem practically does not occur.

  3. Does the procedure effect one’s sight?

In principle sight is not affected, however, before the operation the field of vision could have been restricted due to having had slack upper-eyelids, which will be normalised by the operation. If necessary, also ‘teary eye’ problems can be treated by the lower-eyelid lift.

  4. Can the procedure be carried out on people who wear permanent make-up?

By using magnifying glasses and optical devices, it is possible to avoid damaging permanent make-up. Therefore the procedure can be easily accomplished on wearers of permanent make-up.

  5. Are there any special considerations regarding applying eye make-up after the operation?

After the stitches have been removed, eye make-up can be used. Sometimes small blue marks are visible up to a week after the operation and they can be well covered up with make-up.
