Are the results long lasting? When does a subsequent procedure become necessary?
In most cases, where acne and lip wrinkles are concerned, we use dermabrasion. To avoid complications, it is prudent to abrade the skin lightly rather than too deeply, as abrading too deeply could cause scar formation and/or pigment problems. Therefore it is not unusual, that after one year a second procedure is needed.
-
Can dermabrasion be used on all areas of the face?
Dermabrasion is generally reserved for the areas of the face with thicker skin, e.g. above the lips, the chin, cheeks and the forehead. We would never perform dermabrasion on the eyelids.
-
Can dermabrasion be used on other parts of the body, e.g. the hands?
Occasionally dermabrasion is used to treat excessive scarring on other parts of the body, but normally is confined to the face.
-
What is ‘shingles (herpes zoster)- prophylaxis’ and why does it need to be taken before the dermabrasion?
With dermabrasion, occasionally localised herpes can occur, even in patients who have no prior history of lip vesicles. Therefore, the day before the dermabrasion, patients are given a small dose of ‘Aciclovir’ as a prophylaxis, which certainly prevents herpes due to the procedure.
-
Can dermabrasion cause a loss of feeling in the skin?
No, side effects like this can be counted out.
-
Can dermabrasion be carried out on skin with acne or other skin impurities?
Dermabrasion can not be performed on skin with active infections such as pimples. But our dermatologist can provide the appropriate pre-treatment. Following this, antibiotic cream is applied.
